CENSORSHIP

APC is committed to defending public interest information and social justice campaigning material from censorship threats. The Internet has provided a refreshing change from other media that are dominated by powerful political and economic interests. Important voices that would not otherwise have been heard have been able to communicate their ideas widely and gain support for them using the Internet. We believe this represents an important democratic development that must be strengthened and built upon.

On several occasions our members have defended important public interest material against censorship attempts by mirroring it around the world. APC is developing the technical tools and resources to assist them with this. We are working with sympathetic lawyers to ensure that our members and users have up-to-date and accurate legal advice on dealing with censorship attempts and we are developing lobbying and campaigning work to ensure a favourable legal situation for free expression on public interest and social campaigning issues.

APC's Internet Rights project is producing studies of important cases where Internet censorship was attempted and how this was opposed. These studies are being written by people that were actively involved in these cases. Based on these case studies, we are compiling information on technical and legal resources and will be producing best practice guides on dealing with censorship attempts.
